The Chronicles of Wise Owl Joinery > West Kings High Visit, 2008
by Ryan Harris, teacher, West Kings District High School
On the afternoon of November 13th, the West Kings District High School Options & Opportunities (‘02) class took some time out of their busy academic schedule to visit with Richard Cormier owner of Wise Owl Joinery, a timber framing business located in Port Williams.
Throughout the afternoon, Mr. Cormier explained the technique, the history and the applications behind the art of Timber Framing. Upon arriving, we were given a tour of Wise Owl Joinery’s beautiful property, stockyard and workshop. Students were taught how to prepare wood for construction, shown the various tools that are used in the process and explained the business side of the job as well. In addition, we also had the chance to visit Fox Hill Cheese House to witness some of the spectacular work Mr. Cormier has done at that facility.
Our students really enjoyed the opportunity and gained a valuable
appreciation of the hard work and dedication that goes into this type
of work. “I really enjoyed this trip because Richard had
a lot of quality things to say and show us. He is running a very
good business, does quality work and kept us entertained throughout
the day. Thanks!” said Tyler Titus, an ‘02 student. “I
never knew you could do that much cool stuff with wood” said
Trevor Hutt, ’02 student.
The Options & Opportunities program is a three-year academic high school diploma offered by the Department of Education, which offers students a more hands-on learning experience. It is designed to help them make successful transitions from high school to work, a career path or a post-secondary program. Students enter the program in grade 10 and take part in valuable job shadowing, workplace tours, work experience, and co-op placements throughout high school in addition to their regular academic courses. When completed, students receive an opportunity to attend a Nova Scotia Community College program of their choosing.
The West Kings 02 class would like to thank Richard Cormier and his wife Lisa for taking time out of their busy schedules; their hospitality was greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank the people at Fox Hill Cheese House for allowing us to tour their facility and First Student Busses for providing our transportation.
If you would like to have our class tour your facility or business, please contact Ryan Harris at West Kings District High School (902) 847-4440 or . We are always looking for opportunities to visit local businesses and promote the option of hands-on trades as a career.
