Large
log house with full dovetail joinery, built with old
growth Douglas Fir logs
Forrest Island off Sidney, Vancouver Island, BC - winter 1992
The last project Richard worked on before heading to Ontario to pursue timber framing full time was on Forrest Island off Sidney, Vancouver Island.
This custom house was 140 feet long and built with old growth Douglas Fir logs with full dovetail joinery. It took four of us a full year to complete the log work on site. However, we were multi-tasking and preparing the subfloor at the same time.
Long-time friend and captain of this large project, Dave Gardner of Vernon, BC, kept the crew on the site mill working steadily and the log building crew informed of any issues that arose.

Copper flashing and river
rock compliment this fine architecture.
Log Jam chinking provided a good seal for the walls.
The wonderful thing about this craft is that one gets to travel to the coolest places on the planet and work with the nicest people – the clients and co-workers.
